The Orioles' Opening Day Blues: A Tale of Injury and Resilience
In a bittersweet start to the 2026 MLB season, the Baltimore Orioles find themselves without their star second baseman, Jackson Holliday, due to an unfortunate injury. But here's where it gets controversial: despite the setback, the team's resilience and strategic moves could still propel them forward.
SARASOTA, Florida - On the very first day of Spring Training, Orioles president of baseball operations, Mike Elias, broke the news: Jackson Holliday, the team's rising star, had suffered a broken hamate bone in his right hand while practicing last Friday. This injury, though common among baseball players, will keep Holliday off the field for the highly anticipated Opening Day on March 26 against the Twins.
Elias estimates that Holliday's recovery will take "weeks" post-Opening Day, leaving fans and the team wondering about the impact on their season. But this is where the story takes an intriguing turn.
"It's a common injury, but it's going to keep him out for a while," Elias said. "But we're confident in our depth and the steps we've taken to mitigate the impact."
Indeed, the Orioles have a deep bench, and players like Blaze Alexander and Jeremiah Jackson are ready to step up and fill the void at second base. Coby Mayo, too, is expected to get significant playing time at third this spring.
But here's the part most people miss: Holliday's absence could be a blessing in disguise. It gives other players a chance to shine and the team an opportunity to strategize and adapt.

And this is not the only injury the Orioles are managing. Third baseman Jordan Westburg is dealing with a right oblique injury, but Elias assures that his Opening Day status is not at risk. Colin Selby, a right-hander, will also miss Opening Day due to right shoulder inflammation.
However, there's some good news on the horizon. Right-hander Félix Bautista, who underwent right shoulder surgery, is making excellent progress, and there's a chance he could return later in the season. Similarly, Zach Eflin, who had back surgery, is fully participating in camp and expected to be in the rotation for the season opener.
