Bold statement: A farming accident changed a young life forever, and a golfing legend is helping share her resilience while rallying support for a family in need. And this is the part most people miss: acts of community kindness can come from surprising places, including famous athletes who shine a light on local courage.
Irish golf icon Pádraig Harrington has publicly applauded the bravery of Féile O’Sullivan, a West Cork teenager who sustained life-altering injuries in an incident involving a tractor last July. He joined in urging the public to show support for Féile and her family as they navigate the road to recovery.
Féile was injured in Allihies and endured a devastating set of injuries, ultimately losing both legs. Her initial emergency treatment took place locally, followed by care at Cork University Hospital, and she was later transferred to CHI Crumlin. Since the accident, she has undergone dozens of surgeries.
Her condition required weeks in CHI Crumlin’s intensive care unit before she moved to a general ward. Despite the severity of her injuries, Féile’s outlook has remained remarkably positive, a sentiment her mother Maureen shared with the Irish Examiner around Christmas. Maureen described Féile’s progress as a transformation from “zero to 100” in the months since the accident.
According to Maureen, the early ICU goals were simple yet meaningful: Féile would be able to hold a bottle to drink, grasp her iPad and phone to communicate with friends, and eventually sit up by herself. She has surpassed those early milestones and can now move herself to ease discomfort and perform a growing range of tasks.
This week, Harrington posted a photo with Féile on social media, emphasizing her courage and high spirits at just 13 years old. He highlighted her determination and shared a message of encouragement from the community.
Support for Féile’s recovery is underway through two main efforts:
- A golf outing scheduled for April 16–18 is currently sold out, though hole sponsorships and raffle prizes remain available to contribute.
- A school jersey day on Friday, March 20, invites students to wear their favorite jersey and donate 1–2 euros to support Féile’s family.
Organizers are hoping schools nationwide will join these efforts. To contribute or learn more, supporters can visit gaacork.ie/stand4feile.
