On a snowy Saturday in Athens, Georgia, the Bulldogs showed their prowess with a commanding performance against their in-state rival, Emory. With a total of 32 events, Georgia's women and men's teams swept the competition, securing impressive wins and setting the tone for a successful season.
Women's Recap: A Dominant Display
The Georgia women's team kicked things off with a bang, dominating the 200 medley relay. Ieva Maluka, Charlotte Headland, Hayden Hollingsworth, and Katie Belle Sikes combined for an incredible performance, clocking a time of 1:37.45 and setting the pace for the rest of the meet.
Freshman Kennedi Dobson continued her impressive journey, claiming victories in both the 100 and 200 backstroke events. Her lifetime best of 52.57 in the 100 back was a highlight, securing her a spot in the NCAA qualifying standard. Izzy Beau, another freshman, also shone, winning the 100 and 200 fly events and becoming the only swimmer to break the 2-minute barrier.
Maire Landreneau, a sophomore, logged the fastest 100 breast time of the meet with a personal best of 1:00.95. She followed this up with a win in the 200 IM, showcasing her versatility and talent. Freshman Kylie McMurray and her teammate Maeve Eckerman both achieved their first college wins, with Eckerman leading a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 free.
Senior night brought additional excitement as Emma Norton and Maluka each claimed victories. Norton's 100 free win in 49.59 was a standout performance, while Maluka dominated the 500 free, swimming a career-best time of 4:44.00, a remarkable 16 seconds ahead of the field.
Michelle Cummo, a junior, dominated the diving events, sweeping both the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions with impressive scores of 272.78 and 285.83, respectively.
Men's Recap: Following in the Women's Footsteps
The Georgia men's team followed suit, opening the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. Tane Bidois, Finn Wendland, Luca Urlando, and Tomas Koski combined for a swift 1:26.54, leaving Emory's relay team in second place with a time of 1:27.22.
Luca Urlando was the star of the day, earning individual wins in the 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke, as well as contributing to relay victories. His season-best time of 1:33.29 in the 200 free secured him an NCAA-qualifying spot. Urlando's performance was exceptional, earning him a total of eight NCAA Qualifying times this season.
Freshman Finn Hammer secured his first win as a Bulldog in the 1650 freestyle, finishing in 15:07.39, a notable improvement over his teammate Sean Green's 15:13.24.
Senior Roman Valdez swam his fastest season time in the 50 free, winning in 19.95 and becoming the only swimmer to break the 20-second barrier. His teammate, Cale Martter, also impressed with a lifetime best in the 100 fly, winning by over a second with a time of 47.76.
Junior Matthew Bray added to Georgia's success with two diving wins, taking the top spot in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. The 200 free relay team, consisting of Urlando, Bidois, Koski, and Kris Mihaylov, closed out the meet with a win in 1:19.13, showcasing their speed and teamwork.
Emory's men's team secured two event wins, with senior Henri Bonnault leading the way in the 100 breast in 54.28. Freshman Carson Kalish also impressed, winning the 200 IM and leading Emory to a 1-4 sweep in this event.
