Cardiff City 1-1 Stockport County: Late Drama & Colwill's Stunner (2026)

In a thrilling encounter, Cardiff City and Stockport County fought to a 1-1 draw, but the hosts were left feeling hard done by. The game had it all: a potential head injury, a stunning equalizer, and a late flurry of missed opportunities.

The Bluebirds began with a flourish, nearly taking the lead in the opening minutes. Ryan Wintle's pinpoint diagonal pass found Yousef Salech, but his close-range header was straight at the keeper, Ben Hinchliffe. This miss would prove costly.

Stockport struck back immediately. Josh Dacres-Cogley's low shot was parried by Nathan Trott, and Kyle Wootton was on hand to tap in the rebound, giving the visitors a surprise lead.

Then, disaster struck for Cardiff. Salech collided with Brad Hills and suffered a nasty head injury, resulting in a 14-minute treatment and a standing ovation as he was stretchered off. Callum Robinson came on as an early substitute.

But Cardiff rallied, and just before halftime, they found their equalizer. Ollie Tanner and Perry Ng combined down the right, with Tanner squaring the ball for Joel Colwill to smash home a deflected effort, leaving Hinchliffe helpless.

The second half was a tense affair. Cardiff dominated possession, but Stockport remained resilient and threatening on the counter. Gabriel Osho and Calum Chambers were heroes at the back, denying Josh Stokes and Odin Bailey with crucial blocks.

Cardiff's manager, Brian Barry-Murphy, made attacking changes, bringing on Chris Willock, Omari Kellyman, and Isaak Davies. Willock, in particular, caused havoc, setting up chances for Cian Ashford and Robinson, the latter's effort being brilliantly saved by Hinchliffe.

Stockport had their moments, too, with Wintle making vital interventions to keep the scores level. Tempers flared as Josh Stokes avoided a red card for an elbow, sparking controversy.

But despite a late onslaught, Cardiff couldn't find the winner, leaving them frustrated despite their league-topping position. And this is the part most people miss: was it a fair result, or did Cardiff deserve more?
