Aldi's Record Christmas Sales: How Shoppers Are Saving on Grocery Bills (2026)

Aldi's Record-Breaking Christmas Sales: A Tale of Cost-Conscious Shoppers and Festive Feasts

The German discounter Aldi has reported a record-breaking Christmas, with sales soaring by 3% year-on-year in the four weeks leading up to December 24th, reaching a staggering £1.65 billion. This surge in sales coincides with a challenging economic landscape, where shoppers are increasingly mindful of their spending. The UK arm of Aldi, which opened 40 new stores last year, now boasts 1,081 outlets, with a long-term goal of 1,500 stores across the country.

The retailer's success can be attributed to its strategic focus on affordability and quality. Despite a slight dip in food price inflation, many individuals are still grappling with rising living costs. Aldi's 'Specially Selected' premium own-label range, featuring items like The Ultimate Wagyu Fat Roast Potatoes and Double Wrapped Pigs in Blankets, saw a remarkable 12% increase in demand. Additionally, the store sold over 5.5 million bottles of fizz, 56 million potatoes, 37 million carrots, and half a million turkeys during the festive period.

Giles Hurley, CEO of Aldi UK and Ireland, emphasized the affordability of a high-quality Christmas, stating, 'This Christmas proved once again that a great quality Christmas can still be affordable.' However, he also acknowledged the ongoing financial struggles faced by many, particularly in the lead-up to the budget, which could impact consumer spending. This concern is not unfounded, as rival German discount chain Lidl also reported a 'record-breaking' Christmas, with a 10% sales surge to £1.1 billion during the four weeks to Christmas Eve.

Lidl's success can be attributed to its early start in the festive shopping season, with 30 million mince pies sold from September. The chain's easy-peeler clementines and pistachio-based products were also popular, with sales jumping by nearly 40% and almost 100 tonnes sold, respectively. Lidl's loyalty scheme, Lidl Plus, has also contributed to its success, attracting nearly 51 million shoppers, an 8% increase year-over-year.

As the festive season comes to a close, Aldi and Lidl's success stories highlight the importance of cost-conscious shopping and the appeal of affordable, high-quality products. However, the late-November budget timing remains a concern, as it could impact consumer spending in the crucial Christmas period. As we move into the new year, these retailers will continue to play a significant role in shaping the UK's grocery landscape, offering shoppers a range of affordable options for their festive feasts.
